Malaguena Introduction

An exciting percussion break that serves as an introduction to the classic Malaguena.

Pit percussion provides an introduction modeled after Ernesto Lecuona's original piano piece. Battery joins in, beginning with mini-solos and small ensemble features that trade off every six counts. Percussion feature includes a steady accelerando that spirals into a unison long roll and impact statement by the battery that sets up the classic wind entrance to the piece, as heard at the end of the recording.

This feature was designed to work with highly swirling and chaotic drill within the battery, finishing off with a company front at the final roll.

Pit instrumentation:

  • Timpani
  • Two marimbas, each split between two players
  • Xylophone
  • Vibes
  • Chimes
  • Rack percussion
