Shenandoah introduction and accompaniment
Battery and pit introduction to ballad movement, with pit providing sole accompaniment to trombone solo.
Introduction echoes musical themes from the beginning of two previous movements in the show. Battery slowly fades out as they come forward in the drill to kneel behind pit during solo. A solo snare player provides a final statement as the vibes foreshadow the melody from the trombone solo.
Pit accompaniment is designed to deliver harmonic structure in an unobtrusive manner. Use of metric modulations and well-defined dynamic shaping help to keep musical momentum during long notes and at breath locations for the trombone soloist. Brief unison statements add subtle counterpoint to the line.
